This week's selection from the Vintage Vault takes us all the way back to 1967 with Galerie 4. During July 1967, the publisher DSI was on trial in federal court in Minneapolis, charged with mailing obscene photos. After listening to more than a week of testimony about whether photos such as these were obscene, the trial judge in Minneapolis found DSI not guilty. In an opinion which was 45 years ahead of the Supreme Court in the Lawrence case, the trial judge said: "The rights of minorities expressed individually in sexual groups or otherwise must be respected. With increasing research and study, we will in the future come to a better understanding of ourselves, sexual deviants, and others."
